Mary Murphy, Volunteer Coordinator
I am so excited to begin this new adventure of working with the Latino Community Association as the Volunteer Tutor Coordinator. I recently moved back to Central Oregon after completing my masters of arts in International Studies in Orange, California. During my graduate studies, I focused my research on issues pertaining to immigration to the United States and I conducted investigations on migration patterns in Mexico and Costa Rica. I participated in a research internship in Tijuana, Mexico at Casa del Migrante, a shelter for those who have been deported from the US and for refugees escaping social, political, and economic instability in their home countries. My experience in Tijuana helped shape my future goals of continuing to work with nonprofits and immigrant communities.

I was particularly interested in working with the Latino Community Association because, as a Central Oregon native, I understand the need to include people from diverse backgrounds, particularly since the area is changing so dramatically.  I am thrilled to be working with the Latino Community Association as the Volunteer Tutor Coordinator because of the ability to help connect Latino families with people and resources to help them thrive.  I am passionate about building bridges within our community and would like to contribute to making Central Oregon a more inclusive area, where all are welcome.
